Nearly Indestructible M-Disc by Milliennata
Millennata brought out M-Discs with a maximum of
4.7 GB of memory. The trick of optical media is that they are
extremely durable: M discs can even handle the alternate immersion in boiling water
and liquid nitrogen. For this reason, they are particularly well suited for
long-term storage because they do not mind changing temperatures. Now Milleniata presents a new Blu-ray version with more memory.
The new M-Discs Blu-Rays should be available in the
second quarter of 2013. You have up to 25 gigabytes and it can be read by any conventional Blu-Ray player. This is a tremendous step
forward, because the M-Discs from the year 2011 were only playable on dedicated
hardware. Moreover Millenniata has now a distribution partner "Imation", which will distribute the M-Discs under the brand TDK, Memorex and Imation. The production is taken by Ritek.
M-Discs get their data security, as they can only be described
using a special laser and use inorganic material that resembles a stone. Here
the data is actually "engraved".
